I listened to Fairy Tale by Stephen King on audiobook and was instantly hooked. The first half of the novel follows Charlie Reed, a seemingly normal teenager, and Mr. Bowditch, a grumpy old man who lives at the top of a hill, as the former helps the latter recover from a fall. Charlie grows to enjoy Mr. Bowditch’s company which includes taking care of his German Shepard, Radar. At the half way point of the novel, Charlie uncovers the secrets that have been hidden in an old wooden shed that transports him to another world that is under a curse. We spend the rest of the novel exploring this world, uncovering the darkness that has taken control, and fighting to restore what once was. While Charlie’s goal starts with helping Mr. Bowditch and taking care of Radar; he becomes an unlikely hero of his own fairytale.
I found the audiobook the best method for getting through the more slow parts because the narrator really expresses the voices of the various character - even those who are unable to speak. All in all, this novel was descriptive, real and yet imaginary, and riveting. It was the perfect read for a lover of fairy tales and deus ex machina. Solid 4.5 stars!
