Crueler Mercies is an adult historical fantasy following the harrowing journey of a young exiled princess of the Kingdom of Carca, Vita (Victoria). After the execution of her mother, she is sent away by her father, the king. Vita spends years alone in isolation making friends with crows. 

When an enemy army general takes her as his betrothed, Vita is faced with the challenges of survival, love, and pure female rage. She meets Soline, and the two of them team up in the pursuit of justice and revenge using the unstable magic of alchemy. Through their challenges they grow unexpectedly fond of one another and must face the harsh realities of a patriarchal society. 

The novel touches on the horrors of war and the challenges women face in a world controlled by men. I loved the elements of female rage.  The characters were intriguing. I enjoyed the sapphic element especially in a historical fiction/ war novel.

The plot started fast paced and definitely slowed in the middle, but overall I read the novel pretty quickly and found myself wanting to know what happens on the next page. 

I’d definitely recommend this novel if you like historical fiction / fantasy. Solid 4 star read.
